POC / MedLink
Diverting
Apparent Death
Incapacitation
All Phases
FA notifies flightdeck of medical event. First — assess whether it's an immediate divert trigger. Check next tab first.
On Notification from FA FOM §1p.2.2
Acknowledge FA — nature of emergency, condition, "Code Red"?
FOM §1p.2.2 — "Code Red" = unconscious/unresponsive, AED/CPR already initiated
Notify dispatch immediately
FOM §1p.2.2 — regardless of POC contact method
Check for onboard physician — contact POC anyway even if physician onboard
FOM §1p.2.4
Assess international / overwater routing — if diversion limited, advise POC early
FOM §1p.2.1
Contacting POC transfers liability for medical treatment decisions including diversion. (FOM §1p.2.4)
Any of the 4 below = plan for immediate diversion. Contact POC if time and conditions permit.
🔴 Immediate Divert Triggers — FOM §1p.2.3
Uncontrolled bleeding
Cannot be controlled by FA → divert immediately
AED delivers shock
Any shock delivered → divert immediately
Active labor
Pregnancy with active labor → divert immediately
CPR in progress
Active CPR → plan immediate diversion
CPR Special Rule FOM §1p.2.3
FA may discontinue CPR after 30 min with no visible improvement. If discontinued — captain's discretion to continue to destination.
Food Poisoning FOM §1p.2.1
Suspected food poisoning → treat as immediate divert. Retain all suspected food + catering equipment for PHS inspection
FOM §1p.2.1
Not an Immediate Trigger? FOM §1p.2.2
Contact POC — follow flow chart. POC may still recommend diversion. Diversion decision remains with captain.
FOM §1p.2.2
FA uses MedLink on EFB to assess symptoms and create a situation summary. Your role: ensure dispatch is notified, receive POC recommendation, make the final call.
MedLink Available FOM §1p.2.4
FA performs symptom assessment on MedLink → creates situation summary → sends to dispatch / POC
FOM §1p.2.4
Receive situation summary via AirDrop from FA EFB — review POC recommendation
FOM §1p.2.4
Contact POC through dispatch via voice — coordinate operational details if diversion recommended
FOM §1p.2.4

A flight may only land at an airport not on the dispatch release if: the captain declares an emergency with ATC, OR an amended release is obtained from the dispatcher. Both options are available — choose based on urgency. (FOM §7g.1.2)
Legal Authority to Divert FOM §7g.1.2
Option A — Declare emergency with ATC; inform dispatch when time permitsCA AUTHORITY
FOM §7g.1.2 — use when urgency does not allow time for amended release
Option B — Obtain amended dispatch release from dispatcher for new destination/alternate
FOM §7g.1.2 — use when time permits; dispatcher may recommend best airport for servicing/pax handling
A return to departure airport also requires emergency authority or amended release — same rules apply. (FOM §7g.1.2 Note)
Nearest Suitable Airport Rule FOM §1n.5.2 / 14 CFR 121.565
Fuel State Assessment FOM §1n.5.3
Committed to single airport, no delay acceptable → declare "minimum fuel" to ATC
FOM §1n.5.3 — not an emergency; informs ATC all options reduced to one airport
Predicted landing fuel less than RSV at nearest suitable airport → declare "Mayday, mayday, mayday, fuel"EMERGENCY
FOM §1n.5.3 — "American [flight], low fuel, we have __(minutes) of fuel aboard"
Emergency Declaration — When in Doubt FOM §1n.2.1
When any doubt exists — take the conservative approach and declare an emergency. An emergency declaration advises ATC of captain's intent to exercise emergency authority and ensures priority handling. (FOM §1n.2.1)
Mayday — grave and imminent danger, immediate assistance required. "Mayday, mayday, mayday" × 3
FOM §1n.2.1
Pan-Pan — urgent, timely but not immediate assistance. "Pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan" × 3. Note: ARFF may not be activated.
FOM §1n.2.1 — preference given by ATC but airport emergency protocols may not trigger
Emergency Transmission Content FOM §1n.2.1

FOM §1n.2.1 — if lost: report last known position, time, and heading since that position
Notify Dispatch FOM §7c.2.1 / §7g.1.2
Voice call to dispatch — circumstances permitting. If unable to reach dispatch prior to landing, contact after arrival
FOM §7c.2.1 — if unable voice contact and within ACARS coverage, send ACARS diversion message
Non-emergency diversion — dispatch may recommend airport best suited for servicing, pax handling, and system recovery
FOM §7c.2.1
Notify Cabin FOM §1c.6.1
Notify FA-1 of diversion — destination, ETA, nature of situation, any special cabin preparations needed
FOM §1c.6.1 — not a sterile period violation to notify cabin of safe operation matters
A diversion report to dispatch is required whenever landing at other than the planned destination. Voice preferred — ACARS if voice unavailable. (FOM §7c.2.1)
Diversion Report — Required Content FOM §7c.2.1
